Bergen - Gateway to the Fjords
Western Norway: Towns | Holidays | Attractions
Situated on the west coast and the arrival point into Norway for many UK visitors, Bergen is Norway's second city and is packed with history.
It's another one of those
must see places.
If you are arriving by boat then you will realise before you even arrive that Bergen's title of being the gateway to the fjords is well deserved.

Bergen, the Fish Market and Mount Ulriken
The brightly coloured buildings alongside the harbour provides a glimpse into the city's past and while you are there you can't help to be drawn into the quayside fish market. Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen) with its quaint clapperboard houses is well worth visitng and for the family the residents of Bergen's aquarium give regular displays with commentry in English (by the keepers, not the residents!).
The city itself is surrounded by mountains and a short trip up the fenicular railway which ascends
Fløyen from the centre provides a superb view over the city. An alternative and more spectacular view is provided from the cable car at Ulriken.
