Vennesla,
which is located some 15 km north of Kristiansand, has
more than 12.000 inhabitants. Both the main 'Sørlandsbanen'
rail link and the major road from Kristiansand to Setesdal
(Setesdalsveien - Riksvei 9) pass through the district.
Vennesla is centrally located within short distance of
Kristiansand, Kristiansand Airport Kjevik and Kristiansand
Zoo and Amusement
Park.
Vennesla has large areas of virgin forest that provide
ample opportunities for recreation and relaxation. The
River Otra
offers excellent salmon fishing and good catches of trout
and perch are common at Vennesla-fjord and the district's
many other freshwater lakes. Salmon fishing permits are available
from local petrol stations, MX-Sport and from 'Destination
Sørlandet' at Vennesla station. The Setesdalsbanen
is a living museum, a narrow track railroad line which was
opened in 1896, and went all the way to Byglandsfjord in
Setesdalen until 1962.
Bommen River Museum is situated close to the Vennesla-fjord.
Vigeland Manor is a culture centre incorporating local
crafts including a pottery and a traditional floral furniture
decoration.
Restaurant Løa, with its course and conference facilities,
is located in a newly restored farm building. Built in 1850,
the manor is a heritage site, and holds concerts and exhibitions
throughout the year.
