Søgne

Southern Norway: Towns | Holidays | Attractions | Accommodation

SogneAn eventful holiday for the whole family - welcome to the coast of Søgne and its cultural life. Magnificent islets and skerries and a wide range of recreational possibilities await you. Amongst them is Helleviga, which has been awarded a national distinction for its character and facilities.

At Høllen and on Åros you will discover magnificent sandy beaches, in addition to a wide range of accommodation and a large heated outdoor swimming pool. From Høllen you can hop aboard a regular ferry to visit the protected outport of Ny-Hellesund, immortalised in the paintings of Amaldus Nielsen and the writings of Vilhelm Krag. The coastal fort at Ny-Hellesund, which was constructed by the Germans during the Second World War, is open throughout the year and may be visited using the regular ferry from Høllen. On the outer reaches of Trysfjorden lies Trysnes Marina & Holiday Centre, which offers accommodation in fisherman's shacks, a restaurant and a visitor's harbour. This is the perfect location for those interested in sea fishing. Visitors should also pay a visit to the 'Zoological exhibition', a private collection of more than 2000 species of birds and animals and types of minerals.

Søgne is the location of the country's oldest timber framed building; Søgne Gamle Kirke dates back to 1640. Peder Bjørnson, father of Bjørnstjerne, acted as clergyman here from 1853 to 1869. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (the great poet, playwright, and novelist) was married in Søgne and wrote many of his works from its rectory. The Cultural Centre at Søgne Gamle Prestegård holds exhibitions and events throughout the year. Søgne is also famous for the 'Solfunnene' - the country's oldest find of human remains, some 8.600 years old.
The municipality of Søgne with its over 9000 inhabitants is located 15 km west of Kristiansand. Its principle town, Tangvall, lies close to the E-39.
Søgne Service-Centre, at Tangvall, can provide further details of things to do and see. Open all year.
