Birkeland is the administrative centre
of Birkenes with a population of around 4300. Local attractions
include Flakkefossen and the other waterfalls along the
River Digeelva. Bersevannet and Teinefossen are popular
bathing spots just outside of town. The region is famous
for its untouched forests and moors, spectacular waterways
and abundant wildlife.
The River Tovdalselva is being treated with calcium at
the moment to stimulate the salmon stock. However, there
is plenty of excellent fishing in Birkenes. A joint fishing
permit is valid for most of the lakes in the region.

'Gjestehuset' offers overnight accommodation and a cafe.
At Herefoss (approx. 25 km from Birkeland) a summer restaurant
(Åsines Café) has reopened, offering exciting
dishes served in traditional settings.
Torvstrøfabrikken. Norway's only peat museum shows
how peat litter has been produced from 1896 until the present
day. At approx. 1000-years old, the famous 'Mollestadeika'
is the third biggest tree in Norway. Ogge, with its 365
islands and islets is considered to be one of Norway's
canoeing Eldorados. A wilderness experience! Canoes can
be hired at Ogge Gjesteheim.
Destination Sørlandet (Birkenes) is located at
Centrum Video, Birkeland. Its tourist information office
is open from 14th June to 27st August (% 37 27 69 65).
