Ski Resorts in Norway
1. Norway is very easy to get to
Norway is only a two and a half hour flight away from the UK and all of the
major resorts are easily accessible from Oslo or Bergen. In addition Crystal,
Thomson and Neilson all offer charter flights to Fagernes airport which is
just a one and a half hour transfer from the key resorts of Geilo and Hemsedal.
2. Norway has a long season
Norway has virtually guaranteed snow from late November through to the end
of April. This means that it is ideal for those wanting to hit the slopes
as early in the season as possible as well as for families who want to wait
until the Easter school holidays before going.
3. Norway is excellent for families
Norway is extremely safe, almost everyone speaks fluent English (including
the ski instructors!), there are excellent Troll Club nurseries for children
by the slopes and those under 7 receive a free lift pass. In addition the
hotels are very child friendly and most have swimming pools, play areas etc.
There are also lots of other winter activities for children to enjoy - see
point 4!
4. Norway offers an all round winter holiday experience
As well as excellent downhill skiing you can also have a go at cross country
skiing, snowboarding and telemarking - all in the one resort. In addition
there are plenty of other activities on offer including dog sledding, skidooing,
ice fishing, horse sleigh rides and ice skating.
5. Norway is uncrowded
It is very rare to have to queue more than a couple of minutes for a ski lift
in Norway and most of the pistes are very wide, giving lots of space for
children and beginners who want to practise their turns.
6. Norway offers a great choice of accommodation
Guests can choose between historic mountain hotels, small family run properites
and up to date modern hotels. There are also excellent cabins and apartments
on offer, many of these right by the slopes.
7. Norway has the Fjords!
Norway is best known for the stunning and dramatic scenery of the fjord region.
Most of the ski resorts are within easy reach of the fjords making an ideal
day trip for those wanting a break from skiing.
8. Norway has a resort for everyone
Norway has a resort to suit all tastes, whether it is a quiet mountain village
you are looking for or a lively big resort with lots of nightlife. New this
season to the UK market is the resort of Trysil which is Norway's biggest
ski area with 64 runs.
9. Norway hosts a wide range of ski events
There is always plenty going on in Norway and this season is no exception.
Events include the Holmenkollen cross country ski marathon, the Hemsedal
winter golf tournament and the Holmenkollen Ski festival with World Cups
in cross country skiing, Nordic Combined and ski jumping.
10. Norway is excellent value for money
Perhaps suprisingly, skiing in Norway is extremely good value for money. The
standard of accommodation is very high for the price you pay and ski passes
are signifcantly cheaper than in the Alps. With the weakening of the pound
against the Euro, the general cost of living in European resorts will be
signficantly higher this season making Norway the wise man's choice!
