Getting Around by Ferry
With
such an abundance of lakes and fjords snaking their
way inland, it is hardly surprising that sooner or
later your car journey will be interrupted by a ferry.
They
are an indispensable part of the Norwegian road network.
The majority of ferries and high-speed
ships have such frequent departures that queuing is
seldom a big problem. Besides regular ferry service,
several ship companies offer fjord cruises too.
A ferry crossing can be a great way
to break your journey and a marvelous way to see some
spectacular fjords without having to pay over the odds
for a sightseeing tour. A typical crossing will cost
around £7 for a family and car with longer trips
(2 hours or so) costing around £25.
Express Boats
When you are travelling around the west coast, large
express boats are an fast and efficient way to travel
between coastal towns.
Bergen is the hub of these services
linking Norway's second largest city with many coastal
and fjord towns and villages.
Fylkesbaatane runs express boat services
between the county of Sogn og Fjordane and Bergen with
four large catamarans, and local express boat services
within Sogn og Fjordane region.
