Scandinavian Scandinavia What does it mean to you?

It would appear that many people have a differing view of what the term Scandinavian Scandinavia means to them. In other words, which Geographical countries and areas lie within the region that can be classified as the real Scandinavian Scandinavia, or Nordic lands?

Occupying the Scandinavian Peninsula, the countries of Norway and Sweden would never seem to be in any doubt in people’s minds. However, it is when we venture away from this peninsula of land, in Northern Europe, that we start to encounter a true ambiguity on how Scandinavian Scandinavia should actually be defined.

It nearly always extends to Denmark as well, but should it also include Finland and countries and overseas dependencies even farther a field still?

Norway Direct is dedicated to providing a service that will offer people the ultimate site for the consideration of all of the issues which relate to Scandinavian Scandinavia. It is therefore completely apt that such an evaluation of this term should be included here.

Many German people would be inclined to dismiss the fact that Denmark is a part of the true Scandinavian Scandinavia. However, if you are British, you will take an opposing view to this.

spectacular scandinaviaAs Denmark does not occupy any land on the Scandinavian Peninsula, this is the main point that seems to have people divided. Although, before 1658, Denmark did control some territory on the Peninsula.
As far as Finland is concerned, it is worth remembering that the country does occupy some land on the Scandinavian Peninsula itself.

If this were the deciding factor, surely Finland would qualify as a real addition of Scandinavian Scandinavia? But no not necessarily, again this is a controversial point that has been accentuated by the fact that the Finnish people have originated from a different race, than other non-disputed parts of the region. Finnish derives from the Uralic branch of languages, rather than Germanic.

Even more controversially, is the fact that Scandinavian Scandinavia may be thought to extend to Iceland and because of their administrative connection to Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Perhaps it is fair to state here, that Geographically speaking, this could not be. However, from a cultural, political and inter-state trading angle, maybe Scandinavian Scandinavia does stretch out to encompass a large part of the North Atlantic and a good proportion of the continent of North America? Who knows?

Another country that is attempting to assert its connection to the Scandinavian Region, is Estonia. Historically, it would be fair to say that this country has had many ties to its Nordic neighbours, but perhaps Estonia should just be prepared to accept the fact that it is definitely one of the Baltic States and to happily embrace all that this other unique geographical area has to offer.

Whatever your view on this topic, Scandinavian TV is pleased that it has provided you with the opportunity to mull this point over. It may be worth remembering that people that originate from one of the country’s that we have discussed, may consider themselves to be living in the true Scandinavian Scandinavia. With this in mind, perhaps you should try not to offend them with any contrary view.
